CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Paced by a career-best run from All-American Tom Dodd, the University of Michigan men's track and field team's limited contingent turned in solid performances on the first day of the B1G Fighting Illini Relays on Friday (April 23) at the same Illinois Demirjian Park complex that will host next month's Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
In a head-to-head showdown with current Big Ten 1,500-meter leader Jonathan Davis of Illinois, Dodd was the runner-up in a career-best 3:42.66. The indoor All-American stuck with Davis most of the way, but could not quite keep the pace on the final lap despite a strong 58-second split for the last 400 meters.
Dodd did not move up from No. 8 in all-time U-M outdoor history in the event, but he did become the eighth man to dip under 3:43, and the second this season along with teammate Nick Foster.
Michigan claimed three of the top 10 spots in the event with Dodd, seventh-place Thomas Shilgalis and 10th-place Cole Johnson.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Austin Remick led from wire-to-wire to win his U-M outdoor debut in 9:06.62. Joined with teammates Joost Plaetinck, Christian Hubaker, Jacob Branch and Jack Spamer, Michigan now owns five of the top 10 spots on the 2021 Big Ten leaderboard in the event.
Rounding out the day was Derrick Simmons in 12th over 800 meters in 1:52.56.
Michigan has entries in the high jump and distance medley on Saturday to conclude the weekend at Illinois, beginning at 3:30 p.m. CDT.
