• Overall, the Big Ten has an impressive seven teams ranked in the top 20 nationally, including OSU, U-M, No. 11 Rutgers, No. 12 Indiana, No. 15 Wisconsin, No. 16 Iowa and No. 17 Minnesota. Each of those ranked teams will be present this weekend in Ohio.
• Michigan State also will represent the Big Ten Conference, and other opponents include: No. 4 Virginia, No. 9 Tennessee, No. 10 Duke, No. 18 Washington State, No. 20 Syracuse and Notre Dame. Nearly half of the ranked teams in the country will be on the water in Harsha Lake this weekend.
• Last time on the water, the Wolverines raced at home against Texas (April 10). The team finished second to UT throughout the morning, but showed continued improvement for this juncture of the year. It also marked U-M's first home event since May 2019.
• In the early going, U-M's 1V8 has picked up wins against No. 10 Indiana, No. 15 Iowa No. 16 SMU, Michigan State and Louisville (rankings are at the time of competition). The 2V8 also has beaten No. 7 Ohio State and No. 10 Duke. The familiar conference opponents listed, along with Duke and Virginia, will all be present in Ohio.
• After dropping a couple of early races on the first weekend of the season, the 2V8 boat has been progressing well. The boat has won four of six races since defeating nine of a possible 11 opponents including Ohio State, Duke, Indiana and Iowa.
• The U-M 1V4 has lost just two races all season, to No. 3 Virginia in March at Louisville's Cardinal Invitational (March 13), and to No. 2 Texas last weekend. The boat avenged the first of those two second-place finishes by beating UVA in Columbus (April 3).
• The only losses suffered by the 2V4, 3V4 and 1N8 boats this spring cane at home to Texas.
• The Big Ten Conference announced this week that the venue for the Big Ten Championships has been moved from Baraboo, Wis., to Indianapolis, Ind., at the Indianapolis Rowing Center. Fan information is forthcoming.
