OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan rowing team will begin its 2021 spring season with a two-day regatta at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 13-14) at Lake Melton.
The Wolverines will row at a familiar location as the team has traveled to Oak Ridge for spring training on several occasions in recent years, including spring 2020. Overall, this is the third straight year of U-M competition at the Tennessee site.
Big Ten opponents will be present as well as several top AAC, ACC, and SEC programs which will provide quality competition in an early-season run.
The regatta will be held over two days with two Saturday sessions (morning, afternoon), and one Sunday session. Each session will feature participation from all 13 competing teams: Big Ten programs Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin; ACC programs Clemson, Louisville, Notre Dame and Virginia; SEC programs Alabama and Tennessee; AAC programs Southern Methodist and Tulsa.
The Wolverines will race three boats: the first and second varsity eights, and the first varsity four. Each boat will race twice on Saturday and once on Sunday.
The full event schedule can be found on Louisville's site, but U-M will begin in the 10-11 a.m. hour on both days.

Things to Know
• As Michigan begins the long road of the 2021 season, it begins pursuit of its sixth consecutive top-10 NCAA finish. This is the program's 25th year under head coach Mark Rothstein.
• U-M's early-spring ranking of No. 3 in the CRCA/USRowing Preseason Coaches' Poll is no surprise. U-M has been ranked outside the top 10 of the preseason edition of the poll only once in the last six seasons.
• Overall, the Big Ten has six teams ranked in the top 12 nationally, including U-M (No. 3), Ohio State (No. 6), Iowa (No. 8), Rutgers (No. 10), Indiana (No. 11) and Wisconsin (No. 12).
• The ACC and SEC boast a combined four ranked programs, and two of them will be in Tennessee: No. 7 Virginia, and No. 16 Alabama. No. 20-ranked Southern Methodist (AAC) will also be on-hand to compete.
• The Wolverines have nine true freshmen on the roster this year, but also have 12 true sophomores who never got the chance to row for the block M last spring. That leaves a total of 21 athletes making spring debuts.
• More information about the trip and the season can be found in the 2021 Season Preview.
