BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan rowing program celebrated senior day and hosted its final regular-season regatta Saturday (April 25) at Belleville Lake. The Wolverines faced No. 6 Princeton, No. 10 Syracuse and No. 16 Ohio State, earning seven wins across 14 races over two sessions.
The morning session began at 9 a.m. in 56-degree temperatures with a light crosswind. The 1V8 opened the day with a closely contested first 1,000 meters before Princeton built a boat-length advantage over the next 500. Michigan fell short by two boat lengths (8.5 seconds).
Princeton carried that momentum into the second varsity eight, maintaining a boat-length lead and winning by 12.8 seconds.
From the lane farthest from shore, the Wolverines locked into a tight race with Princeton in the 1V4. U-M took an early lead with bow-to-stern overlap at the 500-meter mark before the Tigers regained seats over the second half. Michigan held its edge to earn a photo-finish win by 0.4 seconds.
Michigan and Princeton's 2V4 crews raced side-by-side for the first three quarters before the Tigers edged ahead in the final sprint.
In the 3V8, Princeton built a lead over the first 1,000 meters. The Wolverines made a late push but fell short by seven seconds.
The 3V4 and 4V8 produced two Michigan wins over Ohio State, with times of 7:25.4 and 6:47.2, respectively. In both races, U-M gained early control, reached open water by the 500-meter mark and maintained the lead to the finish.
Conditions remained steady into the afternoon session, which opened with the first varsity eights. Michigan stayed within contact at 500 meters before Syracuse pulled ahead, extending the margin to a 5.8-second win.
The 2V8 gained an early three-seat lead against Syracuse before the crews raced bow-to-bow at the midpoint. The Orange pulled ahead late to win by just two seats (+1.6).
The 1V4 started similarly, with Michigan taking the lead before Syracuse closed the gap. The Wolverines responded with a strong second 1,000 meters to pull away for multiple boat lengths and secure the victory.
Michigan added another win in the 2V4, edging Syracuse by 0.8 seconds in a tightly contested race.
U-M won two of its final three races of the day. Syracuse controlled the 3V8, while Michigan posted open-water victories over Ohio State in the 3V4 and 4V8.
Saturday's races concluded Michigan's regular season. The Wolverines will now prepare for the Big Ten Championships (May 16-17) in Indianapolis, Ind., with competition split across heats and finals.
