ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team completed its regular season on an upward trajectory on the strength of impressive performances at the Silverston Invitational on Friday (Feb. 19). The competition at the U-M Indoor Track Building was the final regular-season competition ahead of next weekend's Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Michigan notched wins in three different events and posted national-caliber results in two others, led by Josh Zeller in the 60-meter hurdles, Dubem Amene at 400 meters, John Meyer in the shot put and the duo of Tom Dodd and Derrick Simmons over 800 meters.
Six days after finishing runner-up in the SPIRE B1G Invitational 60 meter hurdles in 7.91 seconds, Zeller returned to Ann Arbor and ran the exact same time on Friday, this time crossing the line first. Job Mayhue also ran hard as he finished runner-up with a time of 8.06.
Amene shined in just his fourth collegiate meet, smashing his personal record with a time of 47.95 seconds in the 400m dash. This marks his second win in this event of the 2021 indoor season.
Following last week's impressive sub-four-minute mile performance, Dodd made his Michigan debut at 800 meters and finished third with a career-best time of 1:50.65. Simmons charged hard late for a career-best 1:50.68 to finish fourth, and Thomas Shilgalis also ran for a career-best 1:51.22 for fifth.
In the shot put, Meyer finished with a throw of 18.48m (60 feet, 7.5 inches), taking second behind teammate Andrew Liskowitz, who only has outdoor eligibility remaining.
Also in the win column was Zach Stewart, who ran a career-best 8:26.50 to take the 3000-meter run. Anthony Hancock finished runner-up in a career-best time 8:28.37.
Michigan now turns its attention to the Big Ten Indoor Championships, which will be held Feb. 25-27 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
