ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan softball head coach Carol Hutchins announced today (Monday, Nov. 8) the addition of graduate transfer Melina Livingston to the Wolverine program. Livingston, a three-year starter at multiple positions for Penn State, will join the Maize and Blue next semester with two seasons of eligibility.
"First of all, Melina has fantastic character, " said Hutchins. "When I first met her, I knew I wanted her on my team. She is going to be a great Michigan Woman. She's a terrific student, going into the kinesiology graduate program -- they're going to love her too. She adds tremendous experience to our team. I love her versatility; she can play a lot of different positions. So, we're thrilled to have her. "
A utility player, Livingston started every game at shortstop as a PSU freshman, moved to the outfield as a sophomore, then split time between outfield and third base last season. She was a Florida Gulf Coast League All-Star at second base over the summer.
She posted a .293 batting average over her three seasons at Penn State, including a single-season best of .310 as a freshman in 2019, and totaled 77 hits, 50 runs, 39 RBI and eight home runs. She was the Nittany Lions' top hitter last spring and ranked among their top-three leaders in each of her three seasons.
A Detroit native, Livingston was a two-time all-state selection for Regina High School and helped the Saddlelites to a Michigan team state championship (2015) and three Catholic League titles over her prep career. She posted a .689 batting average in a breakout junior season and tallied 30 homers over her last two years.
Livingston, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, will graduate from Penn State this semester with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology before enrolling at Michigan's Rackham Graduate School in January to pursue a master's degree in movement science.
