ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team used a fast start and led by as many as 29 points in a 80-57 exhibition win over Grand Valley State Thursday evening (Nov. 4) at Crisler Center.
Senior Naz Hillmon tallied a double-double of 25 points and 14 rebounds, going 9-for-12 from the floor and 2-for-3 from deep to pace a trio of double-figure scorers. Senior Amy Dilk went for 15 points, eight assists and two boards, with junior Michelle Sidor chipping in 11 points on the strength of three triples. Junior Maddie Nolan just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
U-M shot 51.8 percent (29-for-56) from the floor, hitting at a 47.6 percent clip (10-for-21) from deep. Michigan also won the battle on the glass, grabbing 43 rebounds to just 19 for Grand Valley State.
Michigan hit four triples to start the game and took a 12-3 lead at the 6:12 mark of the first. Dilk hit the first triple, with senior Danielle Rauch, Nolan and Sidor following for the early lead.
The Wolverines led 22-9 after the first 10 minutes but an 8-4 spurt for the Lakers in the second quarter cut Michigan's lead to nine, 26-17, with 6:41 to go before the half. U-M's single-digit lead was short-lived, as Hillmon canned the second of her two first-half triples the next time down the court to push the Wolverine lead back to 12 at 29-17.
Michigan hit the half with a 40-26 lead on the strength of 17 points and nine boards from Hillmon, with Dilk going for seven and Sidor chipping in six on a pair of triples. U-M went 7-for-14 from long range in the first half and held a 23-11 advantage on the glass.
The Maize and Blue opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run, forcing a Grand Valley timeout at the 7:09 mark as Michigan's lead swelled to 20, 48-28. U-M kept its foot on the gas out of the break, as Dilk scored in transition while drawing a foul, with Hillmon grabbing the errant rebound on the ensuing free throw to convert a four-point trip for the Wolverines.
A nifty finish from Rauch capped a 14-2 run for the home team, pushing Michigan's lead to 26, 54-28, with 6:22 remaining in the period.
The Wolverines scored the first five of the final stanza, with Sidor cashing in on her third triple and Nolan converting a second-chance layup to force a GVSU timeout with just 1:25 elapsed as U-M's lead grew to 65-44.
Michigan scored the first 13 points in the final period, holding Grand Valley off the scoreboard for nearly five minutes to put the game away.
