PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas -- Paced by freshman Hunter Thomson's third straight top-20 individual finish, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted an even-par 288 final-round total today (Sunday, Oct. 31), to close 11th at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational with an 870 54-hole total at the Ocean Club Golf Course.
Led by Thomson's opening 70 (-2) and senior Patrick Sullivan's 71 (-1), the Wolverines began their fall finale with an even-par 288 -- the fifth par-or-better team total of the season -- and positioned themselves fifth in the 12-team field. Despite a 73 (+1) from Thomson and classmate Yuqi Liu in the second round, U-M slipped to 10th after a 294 in the second round and a 582 36-hole total. With three 71s (-1) by Thomson, Sullivan and graduate Brendan O'Reilly in the final round, the Wolverines bookend the event with their second even-par 288 to tally an 870 54-hole total and 11th-place finish.
With a 214 (-2) tally, Thomson recorded this third straight sub-par 54-hole total as he paced U-M for the first time in his career, tying for 15th. With two more sub-par rounds, Thomson has fired six even or below par tallies over his last nine.
After tying for 23rd with an even-par 216, Sullivan recorded his third top-25 individual finish this fall after he bookended rounds of 71 around a 74. O'Reilly rounded out the Maize and Blue's top three as he tied for 41st at 220 (73-76-71). Sophomore Ben Hoagland made his collegiate debut as an individual after finishing 66th at 229.
With the fall season completed, the Wolverines will now turn their attention to the mid-season training break. U-M will tee it up in the spring at Houston's Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 14-15. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the Max Golf Course. Last season, the Maize and Blue posted a 12th-place finish in the Cougars' event.
