Fenty and Siimar Go 3-0 in Doubles, Beaty Claims Four Wins at OSU Invite

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team opened the 2021 spring season at the Ohio State Invitational with four days of tennis (Friday through Monday, Jan. 15-18) against No. 3 Ohio State as well as Illinois.
The No. 2-ranked doubles pair of Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar picked up where they left off last season and won all three matches at Ohio State. On Friday they took down No. 4 ranked Robert Coach and John McNally (OSU), 6-2. JJ Mercer/JJ Tracy were their next victims in a 6-3 match before a 6-2 win over No. 51 Connor Kingsley/Kyle Seelig (OSU) on Sunday.
Nick Beaty went 4-2 in his six singles matches. On Friday he claimed wins over Ohio State's Tracy (8-6) and Mercer (8-2). After dropping a match to No. 5-ranked Kingsley (OSU), Beaty rebounded with wins over Illinois' Nic Meister (8-3) and Hunter Heck (8-6).
No. 28-ranked Ondrej Styler played three of his five singles matches against other ranked opponents. He topped No. 25 Seelig (OSU) in a tight 8-7 (10-8) match on Friday. After losing to No. 5 Kingsley (OSU), he pushed No. 11 McNally (OSU) to a tiebreak before falling 8-7 (7-2).
Mattias Siimar also claimed a victory over 25th-ranked Seelig, 8-2, and posted an 8-6 win over Tracy.
Kristofer Siimar handidly topped Meister of Illinois in his only match of the weekend, 8-2.
The Wolverines will begin dual action next weekend with an ITA Kickoff event at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan will take on No. 15 Baylor at 10 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 23), with No. 11 Texas A&M and No. 21 Pepperdine competing in the second match of the afternoon. The winners will play Sunday for a place in the ITA National Indoor Championship in February. Last year Michigan reached the semifinals of the ITA Indoors.
