
Wolverines to Host ITA Kick-Off at VTC

The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team begins dual-match play this weekend, hosting the ITA Kick-Off on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 23-24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines will take on No. 15 Baylor at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 23), and U-M will face either No. 11 Texas A&M or No. 21 Pepperdine on Sunday (Jan. 24).
The winners of Saturday's matches will compete in the championship on Sunday at 2 p.m., with the consolation match beginning at 10 a.m.
There is no public access at U-M events due to Big Ten policy currently in effect, with all eight courts available for streaming through MGoBlue.com.
About the ITA Kick-Off Weekend
The No. 1 team at each site will face the No. 4 team, while the No. 2 faces the No. 3. Two matches are guaranteed -- the winners/losers will play the following day. This year, the seven teams that win their kickoff will be invited to play in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Feb. 12-13, to be hosted by University of Illinois.

Wolverine Bites
• Michigan won its ITA Kick-Off last season for the first time since 2009, defeating Texas Tech and Ole Miss by identical 4-3 scores at Illinois. The Wolverines reached the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championship in Madison, Wis., with a 4-3 win over No. 7 Texas A&M and a 4-2 triumph over No. 4 Texas before falling, 4-3, to No. 1 USC in the semifinals.
• Michigan and Baylor have met twice before during the regular season. The first meeting was a 5-2 U-M win in Waco, Texas, in 1993. In 2019, the Wolverines were defeated by the Bears, 4-1, in a regular-season matchup.
• Michigan has the No. 2-ranked doubles team in Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar. The duo had a 13-match win streak last season and were named All-Americans while posting a 13-2 dual record and a 25-4 overall record.
• No. 14-ranked Andrew Fenty earned All-America honors in singles while claiming the Big Ten Player of the Year honor. He posted a 17-9 record in singles and was 11-4 at No. 1 singles in dual-match play. Fenty was 7-1 against ranked opponents and finished the spring ranked No. 16.
• No. 28 Ondrej Styler was named first-team All-Big Ten last season as a freshman. He went 18-8 overall and 9-3 in dual matches. Ranked in the top 100 all of last season, he posted five wins over ranked opponents.
• In 2020, Michigan won the doubles point in 14 of 17 matches and had four wins over top-10 teams.
• Adam Steinberg was the head coach at Pepperdine from 2002-14, posting a record of 265-92. He has not faced off against his former team since coming to Michigan.
