ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the season, 4-0, to No. 15 Baylor on Saturday (Jan. 23) in the opening match of the ITA Kick-Off at the Varsity Tennis Center.
With six ranked singles players, including four graduate transfers, and two ranked doubles pairs, Baylor won its fifth straight match.
The Bears took the doubles point, winning at Nos. 2 and 3, while Michigan had the upper hand in the unfinished match at No. 1. Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar, ranked No. 2 in the nation, had a 5-2 edge on No. 10-ranked Sven Lah and Constantin Frantzen and never trailed before the match was called.
Ondrej Styler and Connor Johnston dropped the last three sets after being tied, 3-3, with Adrian Boitan and Nick Stachowiak to fall, 3-6, at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 3, Nick Beaty and Patrick Maloney had a 3-2 lead over Charlie Broom and Matis Soto before the Bears won three straight to take a 5-3 edge. After Beaty and Maloney got one back on a deuce point, Baylor closed out for the 6-4 win.
Michigan had its work cut out for it in singles, as the Wolverines faced five ranked opponents.
Baylor took all six first sets with No. 56 Matias Soto taking No. 2 singles from No. 28 Syler, 6-4, 7-5. Duke grad transfer Spencer Furman battled freshman Jacob Bickersteth at No. 6 and pulled out 7-5 and 6-4 wins to push the Bears to a 3-0 team lead.
Mattias Siimar forced a third set against No. 43 Lah, who won the first set, 6-4, before Siimar rebounded with a commanding 6-1 score. Tied, 2-2, in the decisive third set, Lah won the next three games to improve to 5-2. Siimar took the next point but was unable to win the four straight that he needed.
No. 14 Fenty was up, 3-1, in the third set against No. 46 Adrian Boitan before the match was called. Boitan took the first game, 6-2, winning the last four points. Fenty had the edge in the second set before it was deadlocked at 5-5. Fenty closed with the final two points for the 7-5 set win to push the deciding set.
A good matchup was brewing at No. 5 between Nick Beaty and No. 103 Charlie Broom, a grad transfer from Dartmouth. Both first sets were pushed to tiebreakers. Broom took the first set 7-6 (4), before Beaty won 7-6 (5). Down, 4-2, in the tiebreaker, Beaty went on a 5-1 run to take the tiebreaker and second set.
Patrick Maloney and No. 74 Nick Stachowiak, another grad transfer from Duke, had split matches at No. 4, and Maloney had a 3-1 advantage in the third before the match was called. After falling, 5-7, in the first set, Maloney cruised to a 6-1 victory in the second set.
