ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Shot putter Andrew Liskowitz of the University of Michigan men's track and field team was voted the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year as the conference announced its year-end awards on Tuesday (May 12).
Liskowitz, who recently graduated with his master's degree in management, was the Big Ten Indoor champion and the national leader in the shot put before the season was cut short by the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
Those accolades -- along with becoming the No. 3 shot putter in Big Ten history and No. 19 in collegiate history -- earned Liskowitz the conference's top individual honor for field event athletes.
He is the second man in program history to earn Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year during the indoor season, and is just the third to earn it either indoors or outdoors. He follows the lead of 2019 outdoor winner Jack Lint, with former throws teammate Grant Cartwright having claimed the honor indoors in 2017.
No collegian this winter threw farther than Liskowitz, who claimed the Big Ten title with a nation-leading and school-record heave of 21.02m (68 feet, 11.75 inches). No other competitor in the field -- which featured multiple NCAA Championships qualifiers -- came within five feet of Liskowitz, whose four best throws were all superior to the best throw by the runner-up.
The Middletown, New Jersey, native was set to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships as one of the favorites for the national title, but the meet was canceled one day prior to the onset of competition.
Overall, he finished the abbreviated 2020 indoor season ranked No. 15 in the world.
