ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Sierra Brooks was named the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Regional Gymnast of the Year for Region 3 on Tuesday (April 7), becoming the 13th University of Michigan women's gymnast to receive the honor.
Michigan has now had the regional gymnast of the year in four consecutive seasons with Natalie Wojcik winning the honor as a freshman last year, Paige Zaziski in 2018 and Nicole Artz in 2017. Artz (2015 and 2017), Joanna Sampson (2013-14), Lindsey Bruck (2006 and 2008) and Elise Ray (2004 and 2005) all have received the honor twice, while Calli Ryals (2002) and Kylee Botterman (2011) also received the award.
Brooks and Wojcik are the only two to be named Regional Gymnast of the Year as freshmen. Brooks and LSU's Kiya Johnson were the only two freshmen to receive the honor in 2020.
This season, Brooks was the highest ranked all-around in the region, edging out teammate Wojcik. Brooks also ranked in the top three on all four events in the region with the second-best average on vault and bars.
Brooks adds to her impressive list of honors as a freshman. She was a WCGA second team regular-season All-American on vault and all-around, and set a record with seven straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors while helping Michigan win the Big Ten regular-season title.
