LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team wrapped up its spring-break trip on Saturday (March 7) at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
Sophomore Ryan Fu and junior Harrison Brown reached the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, while junior Teddy Oosterbaan and sophomore Jonny Yaffe played into the third round of consolation play.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Fu and Brown lost an 8-2 decision to Jack Katzman and Robert Liu in the round of 64. In the consolation bracket, the Michigan duo handed Boston College's Alexander Chieffalo and Sean Mullins, 8-4. In the next round, they took on a familiar foe -- the pair of Oosterbaan and Yaffe. Fu and Brown defeated their teammates, 8-3 to advance to the consolation.
Oosterbann and Yaffe dropped an 8-3 match to Ball State's Christopher Adams and Vincent Orlando in the main draw to make their way to the third round of the consolation bracket.
Fu and Brown advanced to the quarterfinals after a walkover due to injury.
The quarterfinals pitted Fu and Brown against UC Riverside's Michael Blando and Jayson Blando. With the tournament shifting to a best-of-three set format on Saturday, the Highlander duo won in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3.
The Wolverines will return to dual-match play next Friday (March 13) when they host Michigan State at 6 p.m., at the Varsity Tennis Center.
