NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Thrower Andrew Liskowitz of the University of Michigan men's track and field team has been named the Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year for the 2020 indoor season, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Friday (March 6).
Liskowitz, a graduate student in the Ross School of Business, was voted the winner by the region's coaches on the merits of his status as the current NCAA leader in the shot put and as the Big Ten champion.
He is the second Michigan man to earn this particular indoor Field Athlete of the Year award from the USTFCCCA, joining former teammate Grant Cartwright from 2017. Cartwright went on to finish as the national runner-up in the weight throw that season. Both men are pupils of head coach Jerry Clayton.
That national finish is a result the presently unbeaten Liskowitz aims to replicate or improve on after taking the collegiate lead in his signature event last week with a school-record 21.02m (68-11.75) to win his second straight conference title.
He is the only man in the country to surpass 21 meters so far this indoor season, moving him to No. 19 in collegiate history and No. 34 in American history. He stands at No. 14 in the World Athletics (formerly IAAF) global rankings for 2020.
His nation-leading throw was one of his seven throws farther than 20 meters so far this winter, giving him the second-most of any thrower in the nation.
Heading into the NCAA Championships next Friday and Saturday (March 13-14), Liskowitz has the program's first-ever NCAA indoor shot put title in his sights. He will enter with head-to-head victories over five of his 15 opponents during this 2020 indoor season.
The NCAA Indoor Championships shot put, to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will begin at 7:05 p.m. MDT on Friday (March 13).
