FULLERTON, Calif. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan softball team split its final games of the Judi Garman Classic, winning a 1-0 walk-off against Colorado State after falling to No. 2 Washington, 10-2, in five innings on Sunday (March 1) at CSU Fullerton's Anderson Family Field.
Senior third baseman Madison Uden knocked out a two-out solo home run over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the seventh to break through in the pitchers' duel against Colorado State. It was Uden's first long ball of the season and her second walk-off home run at Michigan. She also doubled in the second inning to earn two of the Wolverines' four hits in the game.
Junior left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien (6-4), who came up short, 1-0, in Saturday's (Feb. 29) pitchers' duel against No. 3 Texas, was outstanding again from the circle, striking out a season-best 14 while allowing four hits and a walk en route to the complete-game shutout.
The Rams' biggest threat came in the top half of the seventh when they used back-to-back two-out singles to put a runner on third base -- their first in scoring position. Beaubien, who shook off a hard comebacker off her leg on the first CSU single, got out of the jam with an unassisted groundout to junior first baseman Taylor Bump.
Michigan suffered its first run-rule defeat of the season in the early slate against second-ranked Washington. The Huskies used a first-inning grand slam to secure an early lead and, after U-M cut the deficit in half with two runs in the home half of the frame, tacked on three apiece in the second and third to pull away.
Freshman shortstop Julia Jimenez and sophomore left fielder Lexie Blair tallied hits in their first at-bats of the game -- Blair posted her fourth double of the weekend -- and scored following a a sac fly and subsequent RBI single from sophomore catcher Hannah Carson.
Sophomore RHP Alex Storako (6-2) took the loss in the circle, allowing six runs off five hits and a walk with three strikeouts through 2.0 innings pitched.
Michigan (12-6) will remain in the Golden State as part of its spring break trip and will play a midweek neutral-site slate on Tuesday (March 3) against St. John's at 4:30 p.m. PST on Tuesday (March 3) at UCLA's Easton Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
