The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan softball team (10-3) will kick off its spring-break trip at the annual Judi Garman Classic this weekend in Fullerton, California. The Wolverines will open up against Loyola Marymount (8-7) at 1:30 p.m. PST on Friday (Feb. 28) then continue with games against No. 3 Texas (16-2) at 2:30 p.m. and No. 25 Texas Tech (10-5) at 5 p.m. PST on Saturday (Feb. 29). Michigan will wrap up with games against No. 2 Washington (15-1) and Colorado State (8-6) on Sunday (March 1). U-M will play all five games on Field 1 at Anderson Family Field.
• The Wolverines will make their 16th straight appearance at the Judi Garman Classic, formerly the Kia Classic. As a regular participant since 2005, Michigan has accumulated a 53-19 record over the stretch. U-M has posted perfect records only four times, going 6-0 in its 2005 appearance -- a feat that propelled the Wolverines to their first No. 1 ranking -- before going 5-0 in 2016 and 2018 and 3-0 in a weather-shortened appearance last season. Michigan defeated No. 2 -- and eventual NCAA champion -- UCLA, 3-1 and No. 5 Washington, 4-2, last season before finishing with a 1-0 walk-off win against Cal State Northridge.
• Michigan is looking to bounce back after dropping each of its last three games at last weekend's Gamecock Invitational (Feb. 21-23). The Wolverines struggled from both sides of the plate over the four-game tournament slate, hitting a season-low .202 as a team with just seven total runs and combining for a 3.77 earned-run average with a .245 batting average against.
• Prior to the losses, the Wolverines' 10-0 start was the program's best since winning each of its first 24 games during the 2011 season. Michigan owns three wins over ranked opposition, including an 11-2, six-inning decision against then-No. 7 Florida.
• Freshman second baseman Julia Jimenez led Michigan with a .417 batting average last weekend, going 5-for-12 with two doubles and an RBI. Sophomore catcher Hannah Carson also batted .364 (4-for-11) with a three-run home run in the finale against Liberty -- her first long ball of the season and second of her career.
• Freshman right-handed pitcher Chandler Dennis made her collegiate debut in the circle last weekend, earning back-to-back relief appearances before starting in the tournament finale against Liberty. She posted a 3.50 ERA with two strikeouts and seven hits allowed over six total innings pitched on the weekend.
• Sophomore RHP Alex Storako ranks sixth nationally with 85 strikeouts on the season and fourth with a 13.1 strikeouts-per-game average. She posted a career-best 16 strikeouts in the season opener against Georgia State (Feb. 7) -- her previous best was 15 at Michigan State last season -- and posted additional double-digit efforts with 13 strikeouts against North Carolina (Feb. 14) and Liberty (Feb. 21). Minnesota's Amber Fiser leads the nation with 91 strikeouts.
