ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked Michigan men's tennis team accomplished a perfect weekend after a 7-0 win over Boston University on Sunday (March 1) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines did not lose a set over their three-match weekend -- a total of 18 singles and doubles combined victories.
The win over the Terriers also completed a perfect weekend during which U-M defeated Penn State, 5-0, on Saturday (Feb. 29) and Brown, 4-0, in Sunday's early match.
"I don't know if we've ever done it before," head coach Adam Steinberg said about his team not losing a single set. "This team has been pretty perfect all year. I don't know if we've ever done it before, but we've done a lot of things this season we haven't done before. It's been pretty sweet watching these guys compete. We're looking forward to the rest of the season."
Harrison Brown and Nick Beaty paired up for the fourth time this season and captured a 6-1 win over Max Harstenstein and Kirill Belov to remain unbeaten as a pair. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead and after allowing one point, they closed the match with a three-point run. No. 2-ranked doubles duo Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar went 3-0 this weekend after a 6-2 win at No. 1 over BU's David Bogatin and Owen Lu. The win gave the Wolverines the doubles point.
At No. 3 doubles Jonny Yaffe competed in his collegiate match, teaming with Teddy Oosterbaan. They went back-and-forth with BU and tied at 3-3, the Terriers grabbed two straight points to lead, 5-3, before the match was left unfinished.
Beaty earned the team's first singles point as he took care of Max Harstenstein, 6-2, 6-1. Kristofer Siimar captured a win at No. 5 singles, his first of the spring season, taking matching 6-2 sets over Pedro Gutierrez. No. 112 Mattias Siimar sealed the win at No. 3 singles with 6-3, 6-1 wins versus Lu.
With the win in hand, the teams played out the remaining three matches. No. 17 Fenty cruised to a 6-2 first-set win at No. 1 against Bogatin, then took the second set, 7-5, after battling back from a 3-1 deficit.
For the second time Sunday, Patrick Maloney posted 6-2, 6-2 wins, this time at No. 4. Over the weekend, Maloney recorded a 3-0 record to improve record to 10-7 this year. Ryan Fu capped off the team match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 6 for his first dual win of the season.
Michigan will spend spring break in La Jolla, California, where they will compete at the Pacific Coast Doubles from Friday through Sunday (March 6-8).
