WEST HARRISON, N.Y. -- With the team match tied at 3-3, No. 48-ranked Andrew Fenty earned a three-set victory to lift the No. 13 University of Michigan men's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over No. 9 Columbia on Sunday (Feb. 9) at Life Time Athletic Club.
The win is the eighth straight for the Wolverines, who handed the Lions their first loss of the season, and the second over a ranked opponent this spring.
Fenty took the first set, 7-5, over No. 20 Jack Lin at No. 1 singles, and Lin answered with a 6-4 win in the second set. With the match tied at 3-3, so, too, was Fenty and Lin's third set. Fenty crushed the next three games for the 6-3 win over Lin and victory for the Wolverines.
In doubles, No. 42-ranked Ondrej Styler and Connor Johnston made quick work at No. 2, dispatching the Lions' duo of Austen Huang and Alex Kotzen, 6-3. Styler and Johnston are now 8-1 at No. 2 doubles this season.
In a highly anticipated No. 1 doubles matchup pitting the No. 4-ranked team of Fenty and Mattias Siimar against Columbia's No. 5-ranked duo of Jack Lin and Jackie Tang, the Wolverines came out on top, 7-5. The win keept Fenty and Siimar unbeaten this spring (8-0) and on a 12-match win streak dating back to the fall season. It marks the highest-ranked opponent they have defeated this season; the pair has also won against the No. 8-, No. 29- and No. 32-ranked teams.
The win by Fenty and Siimar secured the doubles point to give U-M a 1-0 advantage.
Austen Huang evened the match with a two-set win over No. 96 Patrick Maloney at No. 6 singles, but No. 43 Styler quickly put Michigan back on top with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 109 Tang at No. 2.
Johnston pushed the Wolverines ahead, 3-1, winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 4, and Michigan needed one of the three remaining singles matches to secure the win.
The Lions upended Siimar and Nick Beaty at No. 3 and 5 singles, respectively -- the first losses of the dual season for both Wolverines -- to even the match at 3-3.
Michigan next will compete at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Friday through Monday (Feb. 14-17) in Madison, Wisconsin. The draw will be held on Tuesday (Feb. 11).
