Michigan Cruises Past Penn State in Big Ten Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team cruised to victory in its first home match in nearly a month with a 5-0 win over Penn State on Saturday (Feb. 29) in its Big Ten opener at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan (12-3, 1-0 B1G) jumped out to a 1-0 lead following strong play across the board in doubles. U-M's No. 2-ranked doubles team of Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar broke Penn State (7-4, 0-1 B1G) early to gain a lead and never looked back in a 6-2 win.
Seconds later, the No. 3 doubles team of Harrison Brown and Nick Beaty captured the doubles point, also with a 6-2 score. Michigan gained control when it broke Penn State to go up, 3-1. At No. 2 doubles, Ondrej Styler and Connor Johnston had just earned the first break of the match to go up, 4-2, when their play was abandoned as Michigan took the early lead.
Many of the singles matches featured the Wolverines jumping out to large and quick leads. At No. 4 singles, No. 87-ranked Johnston jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then was able to complete a perfect 6-0 set on a deuce point. He dropped only one game overall and quickly earned the first singles victory of the afternoon, 6-0, 6-1.
No. 112-ranked Siimar >went down, 2-1, in the first set, but after tying the score in the next game, he never looked back. He won the first set, 6-2, on five consecutive games then won the second set, 6-4, on a deuce point.
A few minutes later, there were two simultaneous match points at Nos. 5 and 6 featuring Beaty and Patrick Maloney. Both Wolverines captured wins to launch the Maize and Blue to a 5-0 team victory.
The Wolverines will be back in action Sunday morning (March 1) in a doubleheader at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan first will host Brown at 11 a.m. followed by a 4 p.m. match against Boston University.
