
Michigan Rebounds with Final-Match Victory at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Ondrej Styler won the last match on court in three sets to lead the No. 4-ranked Michigan men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Notre Dame on Sunday (Feb. 23) at Eck Tennis Center. The win improved the Wolverines to 11-3, and Styler's last-match clincher was his third of the season.
The No. 32-ranked freshman split the first two sets, 6-4, 3-6, and Styler was tied, 5-5, late in the third set a was knotted at 15-all in the 11th game. Styler closed out the set taking three of the next four points to take a 6-5 advantage with the opportunity to serve for the match and a team win. He quickly jumped out to a 40-love lead, but Nefve scored the next three points, 40-30. Styler served up an ace to give him and the Wolverines the win.
Michigan took the doubles point for the 11th time this season and earned a 1-0 advantage in the match.
After the Irish earned a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, the Michigan duo of Harrison Brown and Nick Beaty evened things up with a 6-4 win its own at No. 3. The duo never trailed in the match, winning the final two points after things were knotted at 4-4.
With the doubles pointc coming down to a matchuo at No. 1, the No. 2-ranked U-M team of and Andrew Fenty earned a 7-5 win over the No. 29 pair of Tristan McCormick ad Axel Nefve. Down 3-0, Siimar and Fentry rallied to even the match at 4-4. Notre Dame picked up the next point, but Michigan hit the next three points for the match and the point as Siimar and Fenty improved their season record to 10-2.
Beaty got things going for the Wolverines in singles. The senior rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Matt Gamble to give U-M a 2-0 lead in the match and ran Beaty's record to 18-6 on the season.
The Irish got on the board with a win at No. 3 as No. 98-ranked McCormick earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 112-ranked Siimar. At No. 1, No. 10-ranked Richard Ciammara ended Fenty's seven-match win streak with a 6-3, 6-2 win to even the team scoring at 2-2.
No. 87-ranked Connor Johnston pushed Michigan back ahead at No. 4 singles, taking the first set, 6-2, and rallied in the second from a 4-2 deficit to win 6-4.
Brown and Styler took their matches at No. 6 and No. 2, respectively, to third sets.
Brown rebounded from a 6-0 first-set setback against Connor Fu, the brother of Michigan's Ryan Fu, to take the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5). He was not able to overcome in the third set, dropping a 6-1 game, and once again bringing the team decision to Styler.
The Wolverines will be back in action at the Varsity Tennis Center for the first time in 28 days when they host Penn State on Saturday (Feb. 29) at noon in U-M's first Big Ten dual match of the season. Michigan will take on a pair of opponents on Sunday (March 1) at the VTC, first playing against Brown at 11 a.m., then will battle Boston University at 4 p.m.
