Wolverines Battle to Defeat Western Michigan, Win Second Match of Day

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan finished off a two-win day at the Varsity Tennis Center with a 4-2 victory over Western Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 1). The win was the second of the afternoon for the Wolverines who took down No. 8 ranked TCU 4-2 this afternoon.
The match was capped off by a three-set rally at No. 1 singles by Andrew Fenty. Although he dropped his first set, he lost only three total games over the next two sets and ended up scoring the final point to give Michigan the victory.
The Wolverines got off to a strong start in their second contest of the day, winning the doubles point. The No. 1 and 2 doubles teams both jumped out to a 4-0 leads. WMU tried to climb back in, but the No. 5-ranked doubles duo Fenty and Mattias Siimar took a 6-2 win while Connor Johnston and Ondrej Styler claimed a 6-1 win.
At No. 3 doubles, Teddy Oosterbaan and Patrick Maloney made their season debut, but the match was left unfinished.
Nick Beaty and Siimar continued their winning streaks in singles play. They finished their matches within seconds of each other, both of them in straight-sets victories.
Ryan Fu had a very strong start and quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead. He closed out the set, despite dropping two games, but WMU's Zac Faveri rallied in the second set to force a third set, but the match was abandoned.
The Wolverines will be heading east next weekend to take on a pair of Ivy League teams. First, Michigan will face Cornell on Friday (Feb. 7) then Columbia on Sunday (Feb. 8).
