Michigan defeats No. 8 TCU Behind Strong Singles Play

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked Michigan Wolverines returned home Saturday (Feb. 1) and earned a 4-2 victory against No. 8 TCU on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 1) at the Varsity Tennis Center. It was the first of two matches for the Wolverines, who will host Western Michigan at 6 p.m. The wins marks the U-M's first victory over a top-10 team since Feb. 26, 2011, when the Wolverines defeated then-ranked No. 6 Duke, 4-3, and the first for head coach Adam Steinberg at Michigan.
After TCU earned the doubles point, the first Michigan has not won this season in five matches, the Wolverines rallied to four singles victories culminating with a Mattias Siimar victory in three sets.
Multiple Wolverines jumped out ahead of the Horned Frogs to begin their first sets, one of them being No. 98-ranked Ondrej Styler. Leading, 5-0, TCU came back with three consecutive games, but Styler closed out the set, 6-3. Using a deuce point win in the second set to go up, 4-2, Styler never looked back and earned a 6-4 win to to notch the first U-M point of the afternoon.
A few minutes later, No. 78 ranked Andrew Fenty posted a straight-sets victory against No. 51-ranked Alastair Gray. Fenty trailed only once the entire match, which came in the second set when he was down, 1-2. From that point, Fenty won five consecutive games to put the Wolverines ahead, 2-1.
Senior Nick Beaty continued his singles win streak, pulling out a straight-sets victory with an 8-6 thriller in the second set tiebreaker and remains unbeaten in singles play at 6-0.
Connor Johnston had an exciting comeback in the first set, culminating with a score of 7-5 tiebreaker win. He won in straight sets, dropping the second set 6-3, but his match was abandoned after Mattias Siimar finished off Tadeas Paroulek at. No. 2.
Siimar had a quick and definitive first set, and it appeared the second set would follow a similar pattern when he jumped out to a 5-2 lead. However, TCU rallied for a 7-5 set victory and forced a deciding third set. Siimar pulled out a 6-3 victory to end the match and gave U-M the team victory.
The Wolverines will be back in action Saturday night (Feb. 1) at 6 p.m. when they host Western Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center.
