Team Notes
• The Wolverines went 3-0 in dual meets during the first half of the season, notching victories over Navy (190-11), Miami University (229-71) and Iowa (173-127). They finished the semester with a second-place finish at the Minnesota Invite (Dec. 4-7 in Minneapolis), notching 40 NCAA standards. The team recently returned from a weeklong training trip in south Florida where it won the Orange Bowl Swim Classic (Jan. 3 in Key Largo, Fla.).
• Michigan jumped 13 spots to No. 5 in the most recent CSCAA/TYR Top 25 rankings (Dec. 11). [ Rankings ]
• Following the Minnesota Invite (Dec. 4-7), seven swimmers have either already qualified for the NCAA Championships or gotten below last year's invited time. Maggie MacNeil, Sierra Schmidt, Kaitlynn Sims and Miranda Tucker already have punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships with at least one NCAA 'A' cut, while Daria Pyshnenko, Vanessa Krause and Chloe Hicks have at least one time below last year's invited time. In addition, the 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay have recorded NCAA 'A' cuts.
• Sophomore Maggie MacNeil tied the NCAA and U.S. Open records in the 100-yard butterfly (49.26) on the third day of the Minnesota Invite on Dec. 6. That time is the fastest in history and the fastest time ever swum on American soil.
• Junior Sierra Schmidt and freshman Kaitlynn Sims are forging a formidable 1-2 punch atop the distance group. The duo ranks second and third in the NCAA this season for the 1,650-yard freestyle and sit third and fourth, respectively, in school history.
• Senior Chloe Hicks is primed for her best postseason yet after setting career bests in three events at the Minnesota Invite. Among the school's all-time performers list, she moved up to third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.12) and 10th on the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.94). She also is just less than a half-second from cracking the list in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.37).
• Senior Miranda Tucker set in-season bests in the breaststroke events at the Minnesota Invite, ranking second in the NCAA in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.41) and third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.01). She also has given the Wolverines another sprint option for relays, clocking a career-best 22.26 in the 50-yard freestyle. That time makes Tucker the sixth-best performer for the 50-yard freestyle in school history (tied with Natasha Moodie).
• Sophomore Olivia Carter made her Michigan debut at the Orange Bowl Classic, clocking a win and setting a new meet record in the 100-meter butterfly. She spent last year at the University of Georgia where she was 2019 SEC Freshman Swimmer of the Year and an All-American in the 200-yard butterfly. Following this season, Carter will have two years of eligibility remaining.
• Seven of the team's eight divers have solidified their spots at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in March. Junior Christy Cutshaw and freshman Lucy Hogan have qualifying scores on all three events, while Allie Klein, Camryn McPherson, Nikki Canale and Lauren Cheetham have the scores on both springboard events. Additionally, freshman Paige Sundermann has a qualifying score on platform.
Opponent Preview
INDIANA is 3-3 on the season, scoring victories over Notre Dame (172-128) and Louisville twice (166-115, 142-139). Its losses came at No. 19 Kentucky (161-139) and to No. 8 Texas (146-134, 168-113). Last year, the Hoosiers ended Michigan's three-year run at the Big Ten Championships, capturing the team title in front of its home crowd in Bloomington. A few of Indiana's swimmers to watch include Noelle Peplowski, a returning All-American in the 200-yard breaststroke; Cassy Jernberg, a three-time All-America honorable mention in the 1,650-yard freestyle; and freshman Cora Dupre, who ranks in the top three of the Big Ten in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyles.
Series: Michigan is 24-12 all-time against Indiana in a series that dates back to 1974-75. Among opponents, Michigan has competed against one other team more than the Hoosiers (Michigan State, 44 meets).
