EUGENE, Ore. -- The No. 17-ranked Michigan men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Oregon on Sunday (Jan. 19) behind winning the doubles point and four singles matches at the Student Tennis Center. With the win, the Wolverines handed the Ducks their first dual loss of the season and swept their West Coast road trip, which included a win over Washington on Friday (Jan. 17).
The Wolverines made quick work of the Ducks in doubles with Ondrej Styler and Connor Johnston grabbing a 6-3 win at No. 2 by earning the last three games against
Facing their highest-ranked doubles opposition of the season, the No. 5-ranked duo of Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar bested the No. 8-ranked team of Ty Gentry and Joshua Charlton by a score of 6-4. Fenty and Siimar started on a 4-0 run before the Ducks won the next three games to cut the U-M lead to 4-3. Fenty and Siimar closed things out winning two of the next three games.
At No. 3 doubles Kristofer Siimar and Harrison Brown were one point away from closing out Riki Oshima and Emmanuel Coste, but the match was abandoned after Michigan secured the doubles point.
Ranked No. 94 in singles play, Styler dispatched Coste at No. 2 in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 to push Michigan ahead 2-0 with the first singles victory.
Nick Beaty gave Michigan a 3-0 lead with a straight-sets win (7-6, 6-3) over Luke Vandecasteele at No. 5.
Mattias Siimar clinched the dual victory for Michigan at No. 3 with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over defeating Gentry.
Kristofer Siimar earned a quick 6-2 win in the first set versus Jesper Klov-Nilsson but Klov-Nilsson responded with a 6-3 win in set two. After reaching 2-2 in set 3, Klov-Nilsson won the next four games for the win.
It was a battle at No. 1 between No. 78-ranked Fenty and No. 14 Charlton. Fenty never trailed in the first set and earned a 6-4 victory. Fenty fought off two set points by Charlton in the second set before falling 7-6 (4). In the final set, Fenty won the tiebreak 7-6 (4) to secure the upset.
Michigan will next be at action at the ITA Kick-Off next weekend (Sat-Sun., Jan. 25-26) in Champaign, Illinois. The Wolverines will face Texas Tech on Saturday (Jan. 25) and will take on either Ole Miss or No. 13-ranked host Illinois on Sunday (Jan. 26).
