CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Senior Nick Beaty went the distance in a victory at No. 5 singles to lift the No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Texas Tech on Friday (Jan. 25) at the ITA Kick-Off at Atkins Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Illinois.
With the team's tied at 3-3, it came down to a marathon match between Beaty and Francisco Vittar. Beaty claimed the first set, 6-2, but Vittar took the second set, 7-6, thanks to an 8-6 tiebreaker win. Beaty led, 3-1, in the final set, but Vittar battled back to take a 6-5 lead and Beaty faced match point. Beaty fought off match point to win the game and forced a tiebreaker.
With No. 78-ranked Andrew Fenty in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles against Parker Wynn, all eyes were on the final two matches. Wynn won the tiebreaker, 7-1, putting Beatty in position to earn the team victory as the teams sat tied at 3-3.
Vittar jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the tiebreak and it appeared the Red Raiders were headed to a team win. Hoever, Beaty clawed his way back, winning the next three points and went on an 8-2 run to earn a 9-7 tiebreaker win and the Michigan victory.
Michigan got off to a quick 1-0 lead as the No. 5-ranked team of Fenty and Mattias Siimar defeated Wynn and Bjorn Thomson 6-1, and on court 2 Ondrej Styler and Connor Johnston handled Ilgiz Valiev/Jackson Cobb, 6-0. Harrison Brown and Kristofer Siimar had a 4-3 lead over Isaac Arevalo and Reed Collier before the match was abandoned.
Mattias Siimar earned a big win over No. 68-ranked Valiev at No. 2 singles with by matching 6-2 sets to put Michigan up, 2-0.
The Red Raiders knotted the score at 2-2 with a pair of wins at No. 2 and No.3, but Johnston pushed Michigan back into the lead with a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4. before the battles at No. 1 and No. 5 decided the contest.
Michigan will take on Mississippi on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 6 p.m. The Rebels knocked off No. 13 Illinois on Friday night, and the winner of Saturday's match will be invited the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, Feb. 14-17 in Madison, Wisconsin.
