
Wolverines Sweep Way to Win at Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The No. 17-ranked Michigan men's tennis team won the doubles point and swept its singles matches en route to a 7-0 win over Washington on Friday night (Jan. 17) at Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center.
In doubles play, all three matches started off close and on serve. Connor Johnston and Ondrej Styler fell behind early at 2-1 but rattled off five consecutive games to get the first victory of the night, 6-2.
The remaing doubles matches were both at match points simultaneously, but the No. 5-ranked duo of Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar finished off Washington's Jack Davis and Ewen Lumsden, 6-4, to give the Wolverines the doubles point.
During singles play, four different singles matches were tied at 4-4. The Wolverines pulled out some tight first sets that bolstered them to the overall win.
At No. 3 singles, Mattias Siimar had a back-and-forth first set before coming away with a 7-5 victory. He then quickly finished off the match winning the second set 6-2.
It was also a standout night for Kristofer Siimar. After he won a crucial deuce point to go up 5-2 in the first set, he won seven of the next eight games to earn the Wolverines their first singles point of the night.
No. 94-ranked Styler won his first collegiate singles match, coming back from a first-set deficit to win, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Seconds later, No. 78 Andrew Fenty won his first match of the season, defeating Ewen Lumsden, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1. Fenty won three consecutive points to earn the first set to help propel him to the straight-sets victory.
Nick Beaty was the third Wolverine to win, finishing off Jack Pulliam, 7-5, 7-6 (4) in a hard-fought match.
Johnston finished the Michigan sweep as he fended off Liam Puttergill in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
The Wolverines will look to continue their winning ways Sunday (Jan. 19), when they take on Oregon in Eugene at 11 a.m. PST.
