SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Two members of the University of Michigan's men's tennis team traveled to the West Coast for the Battle in the Bay Invitational at the California Tennis Club (Sept. 19-22).
Freshman Ondrej Styler battled it out the entirety of the tournament and took part in the final round Sunday (Sept. 22) but fell, 6-2, 6-4, against Brandon Holt of USC. Styler began Friday (Sept. 20) with two straight tiebreaker sets to capture a 7-6(3), 7-6(4) win over UCSB's Victor Krustev and earned two more victories Saturday (Sept. 21) over Andre Ilagan of Hawaii (6-3, 6-2) and Yuta Kikuchi of California (6-4, 7-5).
The Czech Republic native ended his time in San Francisco with a 6-4, 7-6(4) win in the semifinals against Sangeet Sridhar of Stanford before his match against Holt.
Sophomore Patrick Maloney lost his singles qualifying match but came back to defeat Mitchell Johnson of San Francisco, 6-3, 6-3, and Phuc Huynh of San Francisco, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(8), in consolation play.
Michigan will head to the University of Tulsa in two weeks (Oct. 5-13) for the ITA All-American Championships.
