
Michigan Falls at Marquette in Double Overtime

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell for the first time this season with a 1-0 loss to Marquette in double overtime Sunday (Sept. 1) at Valley Fields.
The Wolverines outshot the Golden Eagles, 25-7, with 10 shots on goal but could not sneak a shot past the Marquette keeper to lock up a win.
Junior Nicki Hernandez took six shots, while Samantha DeVecchi had five for Michigan with three reaching net.
U-M quickly took control of the field and fired off three straight shots in the opening four minutes. The Wolverines continued to pressure the Marquette defense with eight more shots in the first half, testing the keeper four times, but did not find the back of the net as they would head into the second half scoreless.
Michigan outshot the Golden Eagles, 11-4, in the first half with four shots on goal, while the U-M defense did not allow a shot to reach Hillary Beall in the first half.
The Wolverines could not capitalize on the opportunities in the second half which sent the match into overtime for the second time this season. After a scoreless 10 minutes of extra time, the teams went into the second overtime period. Hernandez gave the Wolverines a good look early on but it was Marquette who scored the golden goal in the 108th minute to earn the double-overtime victory.
Michigan will return to action, and U-M Soccer Stadium, on Friday (Sept. 6) at 7:30 p.m. when it takes on Notre Dame in the tail end of a doubleheader with the U-M men's team.
