ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season with a 1-0 setback to Notre Dame on Friday night (Sept. 6) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Fighting Irish scored the game-winner in the 87th minute when a cross was sent in and headed down into the bottom-left corner of the goal to give Notre Dame its fifth straight win.
Junior Sarah Stratigakis led U-M with all three of her shots on goal, while Raleigh Loughman had one shot on net against Notre Dame. Junior goalkeeper Hillary Beall made three saves and allowed one goal in her fifth start of the year.
Michigan earned three chances to get on the scoreboard in the first half as Stratigakis fired two shots at the Notre Dame keeper and Loughman challenged her one time. Stratigakis came inches away from finding the back of the net from seven yards out in the 26th minute before Loughman took the rebound shot at the net that the keeper knocked out of play with her fingertips.
Minutes later, the Fighting Irish looked as if they would have a one-on-one opportunity with Beall when Brooke VanDyck raced down the field alone before Janiece Joyner ran her down from across the field and regained possession for the Maize and Blue.
Notre Dame put one shot on net in the opening half as the two teams went into the break scoreless.
The Wolverines added three final shots, including another on goal from Stratigakis, but were unable to sneak a goal past Mattie Interian.
Michigan will celebrate the careers of Jada Dayne, Brooke Cilley and Sura Yekka on Senior Day, Sunday (Sept. 8) when the Wolverines welcome Bowling Green to U-M Soccer Stadium for a 2 p.m. contest.
