DES MOINES, Iowa -- Rising senior shot putter Andrew Liskowitz of the University of Michigan men's track and field team closed out his 2019 campaign with a strong finish against some of the world's best at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Friday (July 26).
Liskowitz finished 12th in the nation in one of the deepest shot put fields ever assembled for a USA Championships meet, heaving a best of 19.93m (65 feet, 4.75 inches) on his third-and-final attempt.
Though he did not advance to the eight-man final for three additional throws, he posted a solid series of 19.74m (64-9.25), 19.47m (63-10.5) and 19.93m.
His best mark of the day matched the best throw from 2019 NCAA Outdoor champion Tripp Piperi of Texas, with Liskowitz emerging ahead in a tiebreaker. His second-best throw of 19.74m was better than Piperi's second-best put of 19.55m (64-1.75).
Of the five 2019 collegians in the field, Liskowitz was second only to indoor champion Payton Otterdahl of North Dakota State and his 20.67m (67-9.75) for sixth.
Reigning Olympic gold medalist Ryan Crouser won the competition with a mark of 22.62m (74-2.5).
The competition wraps up a stellar outdoor season of competition that saw Liskowitz achieve an average distance of 19.54m (64-1.25) on 44 measured throws. For comparison, in 2018 he surpassed that distance only five times in the entire outdoor season.
