ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Redshirt junior Andrew Liskowitz of the University of Michigan men's track and field team smashed his own school record in the shot put on Saturday (June 29), and put himself in position to compete internationally along the way.
Competing in a small throws-only meet at the U-M Outdoor Track and Field Stadium, Liskowitz threw a titanic 21.15m (69 feet, 4.75 inches) mark on his sixth-and-final attempt to surpass his school record of 20.28m (66-6.5) from 2018 by nearly a full meter.
His throw ranks him No. 19 in the world this year, and No. 39 on the all-time American performers list.
Liskowitz, who three weeks ago earned first team All-America honors for the first time in his career with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, has now surpassed the qualifying standards for both the 2019 IAAF World Championships and the 2020 Olympic Games.
Should he perform well enough at the USATF Outdoor Championships later this summer and/or the U.S. Olympic Trials next summer, he would be eligible to represent Team USA on the planet's biggest stages.
His mark also is the farthest thrown during the outdoor season in the state of Michigan.
