ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior designated player Mackenzie Nemitz delivered a walk-off, two-run double with two outs in the seven inning to rally the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan softball team to a 7-6 decision over Indiana on Sunday afternoon (April 7) in front of a crowd of 2,152 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. The win completed the Wolverines' weekend sweep and extended their win streak to 15 games.
Four Michigan seniors had a hand in the three-run, seventh-inning rally.
Senior second baseman Faith Canfield knocked out a one-out solo home run to straightaway center field -- her fifth of the season -- to make the score 6-5. Senior center fielder Natalie Peters flared a well-placed double just inside the left-field line, and senior first baseman Alex Sobczak drew an intentional walk to put the go-ahead run aboard with two outs.
Nemitz, who had tripled and singled already in the game, worked the count full before roping a two-run double to the right-center field gap. Indiana's center fielder and right fielder struggled to corral the ball cleanly on the warning track as Sobczak, going all the way, came around third to score standing up for the final run.
Canfield, Peters, Sobczak and Nemitz combined for eight hits and all seven RBI in the contest.
Michigan also scored two runs apiece in the first and third innings. Sobczak, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI on Alex Sobczak Day, drove in the game's first run with a roped RBI double that reached the center-field track and then went yard in her second plate appearance, knocking out a two-run shot to left-center in the third -- her team-best seventh home run of the season.
Indiana had evened the game with a two-run homer of its own in the top half of the third and took their first lead with a four spot in the fourth, capitalizing on a bases-loaded single that got past freshman left fielder Lexie Blair to allow three runs to score.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien, who entered the game with a runner on and no outs in the fourth, settled in after the errant inning and allowed no runs and just three baserunners over the final three frames.
Beaubien (16-3) and freshman right-hander Alex Storako combined for 10 strikeouts and allowed six runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits and two walks.
Michigan (27-10, 9-0 Big Ten) will hit the road next weekend, kicking off a seven-game road stretch with a three-game set against Ohio State at Buckeye Field in Columbus. The series opens up with a 6 p.m. slate on Friday (April 12).
