ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan softball team claimed its 14th straight win and clinched its weekend series with a 3-2 decision against Indiana on Saturday afternoon (April 6) in front of a sellout crowd of 2,490 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
The Wolverines have not seen their recent offensive production carry into the weekend series with Indiana but came up with some timely hits to build their lead over the third and fourth innings. Senior second baseman Faith Canfield and sophomore shortstop Natalia Rodriguez led Michigan with two hits apiece from the top and bottom of the order.
Michigan broke through with a pair of runs in the third. After a leadoff walk, Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance freshman pinch-runner Grace Chelemen but beat it out instead to put two baserunners on. The lineup turned over to Canfield, who chopped a single over the IU pitcher's head and up the middle to score Chelemen. Rodriguez came home on a sacrifice fly two batters later.
After using small ball for its two runs in the third, Michigan went big in the fourth with junior third baseman Madison Uden's solo shot to left-center -- her third home run of the season. The Wolverines have now homered in eight straight games and 13 of their last 14.
Indiana used the long ball for both of its runs, tallying solo home runs in the top of the fifth and with two outs in the top of the seventh. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien, who earned the win in relief, followed the latter with a hit-by-pitch to put the tying run aboard but earned a game-ending strikeout on the payoff pitch in the next at-bat.
Beaubien (15-3) allowed two runs on two hits and struck five through 3.1 innings.
Freshman right-hander Alex Storako also was solid in the game's start, fanning eight Hoosiers while allowing no hits and three walks through 3.2 innings. Beaubien entered the game after back-to-back walks with two outs in the fourth and forced a soft grounder to second base to get out of the jam.
Michigan (26-10, 8-0 Big Ten) will wrap up its weekend series against Indiana on Sunday (April 7) with a 1 p.m. slate at Alumni Field. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
