
Michigan Heads to Baylor for NCAA Regionals

The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team (17-8) will travel to Baylor University (Waco, Texas) for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend (May 3-4). Michigan will take on No. 39-ranked Dartmouth (15-8) in the first round on Friday (May 3) at 3 p.m. CDT, with the winner playing either Utah (17-11) or host Baylor (22-5) on Saturday (May 4) at 6 p.m. CDT. The winner of the regional will advance to next weekend's super regional, hosted at the highest remaining seed in the round of 16.
• The Wolverines are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season and 30th overall in program history. U-M is in search of its second consecutive trip to the round of 16, which would mark the fifth time since 1980.
• U-M is 15-29 all-time in the NCAA Tournament since 1977. Its best finish in the tournament is a Final Four appearance in 1988.
• No. 39 Dartmouth (15-8) is making its third NCAA appearance in the last four seasons. The Big Green finished the regular season tied for fourth in the Ivy League with a 4-3 conference mark. This will be the second meeting between U-M and Dartmouth, with the Big Green winning the first meeting, 4-3, on Feb. 26, 2015.
• No. 6-seed Baylor (22-5) is hosting the NCAA first and seconds rounds for the 13th time in the last 17 years and is making its 22nd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Bears won their ninth Big 12 Tournament Championship on April 21, with a 4-1 win over Texas. U-M and Baylor have met three times, with the Maize and Blue holding a 2-1 record over the the Bears in the all-time series. The two teams met earlier this season in Ann Arbor during the ITA Kick-off, with Baylor winning 4-1.
• No. 42 Utah (17-11) will make its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 14th in program history. The Utes had a 2-6 mark in Pac-12 play, defeating No. 31 Oregon and No. 12 Stanford. Utah and Michigan have met one time (1987) with the Wolverines coming out victorious.
• Michigan remained in the top 25 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings heading into the NCAA Tournament, coming in at No. 20 this week. The Wolverines have been in the top 25 all season, with their highest ranking being No. 13 on March 12.
• The Maize and Blue has two players in the ITA singles rankings. Andrew Fenty comes in at No. 48 -- jumping 61 spots from last week, while Mattias Siimar checks in at No. 74. Connor Johnston along with Siimar are ranked No. 60 in doubles, there first ranking as a pair this season.
• Fenty was named first team All-Big Ten and Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Thursday (April 25). Fenty becomes the fourth Wolverine to earn Freshman of the Year honors (Mal Washington, Dan Brakus and Evan King).
• Andrew Fenty earned his team-leading 27th win this past weekend, which is the third most in program history for a freshman. Fenty also has a team-leading 20 doubles wins this season, which ranks eighth most by a freshman. He becomes the 28th player in Michigan history to join the 20-20 club (20 doubles wins and 20 singles wins in a season) and just the sixth freshman.
• Fenty comes into the tournament with the Wolverines' longest active singles win streak, having won in seven straight matches. His most recent win came against No. 1-ranked (No. 270 ATP) JJ Wolf of Ohio State, handing him his first loss of the season. Prior to the match, Wolf hadn't dropped a set in a match since March 1.
• Fenty was an at-large selection for the NCAA Individual Championships, May 20-25, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, which will take place following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-19.Â
