ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan softball team was dominant in its return home, using free bases and big and timely hits to roll to a 24-3 win in five innings against Toledo on Wednesday evening (April 3) in front of 1,133 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. With the win, U-M extended its win streak to 12 straight games and improved to 8-0 at home this season.
The Wolverines accumulated their 24 runs -- the second most in program history -- over the first three innings, including a 13-spot in the second. Michigan took advantage of a season-high 13 walks, earning RBI on six as well as a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.
The freshman class stood out, with catcher Hannah Carson and second baseman Gianna Carosone both knocking out their first home runs. Carson launched a second-inning grand slam as part of a 2-for-2, six-RBI day, while Carosone posted a leadoff homer in the third for her first collegiate hit.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Alex Storako (10-6) struck out seven Rocket batters, including four in the second inning after a wild pitch put the leadoff batter on, and allowed no hits through three innings pitched. She is the eighth Wolverine freshman hurler to reach 10 wins since 2000.
Senior first baseman Alex Sobczak, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, drove in the game's first run with a lined single into shallow right field as part of a two-hit effort. Three Wolverines posted multi-hit games, while four tallied multi-RBI games. Carson and junior right fielder Haley Hoogenraad, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, did both.
Carson's grand slam was the highlight of the Wolverines' 13-run second. Toledo walked six batters in the inning and walked in four runs over a five-plate-appearance stretch before Carson cleared the bases with a line-drive shot over the right-field wall.
Carosone led off the third -- after Storako retired the side on just 11 pitches in the top half -- with a solo blast that just cleared the wall in left center field. Hoogenraad and Carson followed with back-to-back RBI hits to close out the Wolverines' scoring; the latter a two-run double off the right-center field wall that brought Carson's RBI total to six, matching a Michigan season high.
Toledo narrowed the final score with three runs in the fourth before sophomore righty Sarah Schaefer responded with a quiet fifth inning, snaring a soft liner back to the circle for the final out. Every Michigan player but sophomore left-hander Meghan Beaubien appeared in the midweek contest.
Michigan (24-10) will remain at home this weekend, kicking off a three-game set against Indiana at 5 p.m. on Friday (April 5) at Alumni Field. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
