ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team earned the doubles points and four singles victories in straight sets Sunday (April 14) for a 5-2 win over Wisconsin on Senior Day at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines were in command early in doubles play before Wisconsin charged back on each court by winning consecutive games. U-M held on and earned 6-3 wins at nearly the same time at No. 2 and No. 3 to take the doubles point.
Michigan continued its impressive play into singles action as it claimed first-set wins on all but two courts. Junior Connor Johnston earned U-M's second point of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5, with senior Myles Schalet cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 for his fifth in a row.
Fellow senior Gabe Tishman clinched the match for the Maize and Blue with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph at No. 5, earning his 16th win of the season.
Wisconsin claimed its two points of the day with consecutive wins at Nos. 2 and 4 before freshman Andrew Fenty won his team-leading 23rd match of the season, taking the second set tiebreak, 8-5, for a 7-5, 7-6 (5) victory.
Fenty's 23 singles wins are the 10th most for a freshman in program history, while his 19 doubles wins are tied for ninth most.
Michigan will hit the road next weekend when it travels to Nebraska (Friday, April 19) and Iowa (Sunday, April 21) to conclude its regular-season schedule. The Wolverines then will host the 2019 Big Ten Tournament, Thursday through Sunday, April 25-28, at the Varsity Tennis Center.
