ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team won the doubles point and the first five singles matches off court to defeat Minnesota, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon (April 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center and retain the Little Brown Jug.
U-M grabbed the early lead, taking the doubles point from the Gophers.
It was all Michigan in doubles as all three courts jumped out to early breaks. At No. 2, senior Myles Schalet and freshman Andrew Fenty broke on a deuce point for a 3-1 lead. That ignited the duo as the Wolverines won the remaining three games for a 6-1 win as the first match off court.
Michigan's No. 3 pair of senior Gabe Tishman and sophomore Harrison Brown clinched the match's first point behind a 6-2 victory. The Wolverines broke to open the match, grabbing a 3-0 lead. That was all the space the two needed, easing to a 6-2 victory to wrap up the match's first point.
Fenty cruised at the top spot, picking up the first win of his career at No. 1 in a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Fenty jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and broke early in the second to put Michigan's second point on the board.
Junior Connor Johnston followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 to push Michigan's lead to 3-0. He quickly went up 2-0 to start the match en route to the 6-3 first-set win. He broke on a deuce point for a 3-1 lead in the second and never looked back to grab the third point of the match.
With Michigan leading 3-0, it was a race for the fourth point between Schalet and Tishman. Both held concurrent match points but it was Schalet who came through first.
Schalet took advantage of a late break in the second, going up 5-4 with the opportunity to serve out the match in the next game. He came through on the deuce point, his only match point, clinching the win for Michigan behind a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
Moments later, Tishman wrapped up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 to extend the Michigan lead to 5-0. Tishman followed the same script as Schalet, breaking late for a 5-3 advantage with the opportunity to serve it out. Tishman won the first three points of the game and then came through on the deuce point to wrap up the straight-sets win.
Michigan's other singles victor was freshman Patrick Maloney at No. 4. Maloney split the first two sets, heading to a third set just before the team match was clinched. Maloney found himself in a 2-0 hole before winning two straight games. Minnesota answered with two straight games, but Maloney won the final four games of the set to take a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win.
The Gophers won the final match on court to provide the 6-1 margin.
Michigan will return to the Varsity Tennis Center Sunday (April 14) against Wisconsin. Prior to the match, Schalet and Tishman will be honored as part of Senior Day, with first serve at noon.
