ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan softball team rolled to a 12-0, five-inning victory over Nebraska on Sunday (March 24) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field, to earn a sweep of its first Big Ten Conference series of the season.
The Wolverines pounded out 12 hits, the earn its eighth game in which they have collected 10 hits or more. Three of those hits were back-to-back-to-back solo shots in the third inning off the bats of senior Mackenzie Nemitz, and juniors Haley Hoogenraad and Madison Uden. The three straight home runs against Nebraska marked just the second time in program history the team accomplished the feat, with the first coming on April 14, 2001, against Wisconsin.
Uden went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while senior Natalie Peters had one hit to score three runs and touched home twice. Nemitz ended the day with two hits and two RBI.
Sophomore left-hander Meghan Beaubien earned her 11th win of the season, going all five innings and giving up just one hit while striking out seven.
Nebraska appeared it was going to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second inning with two outs, but the Michigan scored four runs on five hits to take an early 4-0 advantage.
Nemitz, Hoogenraad and Uden did all the damage in the third inning in consecutive at-bats with their trio of solo shots to extend the Wolverines' lead to 7-0. Michigan capitalized on three Nebraska errors and rapped four hits to add five runs to pad its lead to 12-0.
With one out in the top of the fifth inning, Lindsey Walljasper knocked the lone Nebraska hit -- a double into the left-center field gap -- to try to spark the Cornhuskers to a game-extending rally. Beaubien got the next two batters to ground out to end the game.
Michigan will be back in action Tuesday (March 26) when it takes on Central Michigan at 4Â p.m. in Mount Pleasant.
