STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team was unable to recover from dropping the doubles point in a 5-2 loss to Penn State on Friday evening (March 22) at PSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Wolverines claimed the first win in doubles when senior Myles Schalet and freshman Andrew Fenty earned a 6-2 win at No. 2 before Penn State took No. 3 by the same score. The number one court would come down to a tiebreaker, with the Nittany Lions duo of No. 11-ranked Constant De La Basse and Gabriel Nemeth taking it by a score of 8-6.
Penn State increased its lead to 2-0 in singles with a win at No. 4 before U-M got on the board with a win by Fenty at No. 3. The freshman continued his hot play with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3, earning his team-leading 17th victory of the season and ninth in a row.
The Nittany Lions clinched the match earning victories at Nos. 2 and 1, before U-M earned its second and final point of the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 by Gabe Tishman. The senior continued his impressive season with a career-high 12th win and now is tied with a team-high seven wins in dual-match play.
The Wolverines will return home to host rival No. 1-ranked Ohio State on Sunday (March 24). First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center. Fans are encouraged to wear Maize and free Maize Michigan tennis T-shirts will be given to the first 100 fans.
