The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team hits the road for the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge this weekend at Indian Wells, California. The tournament will take place during the final weekend of the 2019 BNP Paribas Open, where 14 matches featuring 11 of the top Division I men's and women's teams will be contested on practice courts 3-8 in the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The final rounds of the ATP and WTA BNP Paribas Open will be played in the main stadiums during the same weekend.
• The BNP Paribas Open is an annual ATP and WTA tennis tournament held in March at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California. The tournament is a Masters 1000 event on the men's tour and is a Premier Mandatory event on the women's tour. It is played on hard courts and is the best-attended tennis tournament outside the four Grand Slam tournaments.
• On the collegiate men's side, the seven following schools will also be participating in the tournament: Arizona State, No.6 Baylor, Cornell, Purdue, No. 31 California, Idaho, and No.16 Southern California.
• Michigan will kick off the weekend playing against Arizona State, and will play either Cornell or USC on Saturday.
• Of the teams participating in the tournament, Michigan has faced Baylor (Jan. 27) and Cornell (Feb. 1) already this season. The Wolverines fell to Baylor, 4-1, in the ITA Kick-Off final, earning their lone point of the day after securing wins at the No.1 and No.2 spots in doubles. The following weekend, Michigan defeated Cornell, 4-1, after earning the doubles point and wins at the No.1, No.3 and No.4 spots.
• The Wolverines last played USC in 1990 (1-7 all-time record), Arizona State in 1997 (3-2 all-time record) and Idaho in 1998 (1-0 all-time record).
• Last season, Michigan played both Cal and Purdue, winning both matches, 4-1 and 6-1, respectively. The Wolverines hold a 4-4 record in the all-time series against Cal and a 73-10 record in the all-time series with Purdue.
• Michigan's last match was Feb. 27, when it defeated Michigan State, 6-1, to kick off Big Ten play. U-M collected the doubles point and five of six singles matches in straight sets in their win against their in-state rival. The following week, the Wolverines had a bye week and spent their spring holiday training in Boca Raton, Florida.
• Ranked No. 56 by the ITA, sophomore Mattias Siimar sports a 12-7 record and is 6-2 in dual matches from the No. 1 spot in the lineup. The Estonia native is coming off an upset win over No. 15-ranked Alex Lebedev of Notre Dame, and a win against Michigan State's Jack Winkler, heading into the weekend on a six-match win streak.
• Freshman Andrew Fenty has a team-leading 14-4 mark in singles play, with a 7-1 record in dual match play, playing at the No. 2 and 3 spots in the lineup. Fenty is tied with Siimar with a team--leading six-match win streak.
• Siimar and Fenty have teamed up in doubles for a team-high 12-3 mark, while going 7-1 in dual matches.
• After its weekend in Indian Wells, the Wolverines will return to Big Ten action Friday, March 22, at 5 p.m., when they take on Penn State in State College.
