ANN ARBOR -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team excelled in the preliminary rounds of the short sprint events during the first day of the Power Five Invitational on Friday (Feb. 1), advancing six different men to two different finals.
Junior Roland Amarteifio and true freshman Asani Hampton were the day's fastest qualifiers in the 60-meter hurdles and 60 meters, respectively, and both brought along at least one teammate along with them to the finals in their respective events.
Amarteifio is one of four Wolverines who made the hurdles final, while Hampton is one of two in the 60-meter final. Those six will be among the Wolverines who compete in Saturday's final session of the Power Five Invitational against the likes of Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Kansas.
Amarteifio clocked a career-best 8.01 seconds for the quickest time of any hurdler on the day, and he was joined as a heat winner by teammate Sierra Hendrix-Williams in a season-best 8.05.
Noah Caudy finished just behind Hendrix-Williams in their heat in a new career-best 8.11, while Job Mayhue was runner-up in his heat with a career-best 8.10.
All four men advanced to the eight-man 60-meter hurdles final which will be contested Saturday (Feb. 2) at 12:10 p.m.
Two weeks after tying the Michigan record for the fastest debut by a freshman at 60 meters, Hampton came within .02 seconds of the overall Michigan freshman record with a 6.77 clocking on Friday. The performance moved him up to No. 7 in school history.
Hampton was followed closely by Desmond Nicholas, who was just .01 off his career-best time in 6.84 as the fourth-fastest man from the prelims. Both Hampton and Nicholas will be back Saturday at 12:15 p.m. for the eight-man final.
The Wolverines competed in two other finals on Friday, both on the track.
Alex Schwedt continued his emergence as a 600-meter runner with a career-best 1:19.86 for the come-from-behind win on the final homestretch in his heat and fourth overall. He now stands tied for No. 14 all-time in Michigan history.
In the Wolverines' lone distance event of the day, Joost Plaetinck was fifth at 5,000 meters in 14:39.04.
Earlier in the day, true freshman Cassidy Henshaw completed the first four events of his first collegiate heptathlon competition. After a day that included collegiate career-best performances in the 60 meters (7.34 seconds), long jump (6.66m/21 feet, 10.25 inches) and shot put (9.48m/31-1.25), and a high jump effort of 2.08m (6-9.75) that was just two centimeters shy of his career best.
At the end of all that, he stands eighth with 2,831 points. He has the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters remaining on day two of the heptathlon, which begins Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
The second and final day of the Power Five Invitational begins at 9:30 a.m. with the resumption of the heptathlon. Field event action begins at 11 a.m. with finals on the track beginning at noon.
