ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team put on a free show for fans at Crisler Center with a first-place finish (195.975) in an exhibition quad meet against Central Michigan (194.500), Western Michigan (193.400) and Western Michigan (192.400) on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 7).
On the competition floor, freshman Sierra Brooks and sophomore Natalie Wojcik were terrific for the Wolverines. Brooks, who reclassified and graduated a year early from high school, showed her routines were collegiate ready. She won the all-around with a score of 39.425, including the top score of the meet on uneven bars (9.925). Wojcik won event titles on balance beam and floor exercise to close out the meet strong. She scored a 9.875 to win by 0.50 on beam and followed with one of two 9.900 scores on floor, tying Central Michigan's Denelle Pedrick for the lead.
Other highlights for the Wolverines included freshman Gabby Wilson scoring a 9.825 or better on all three of her events and sophomore Abby Brenner's 9.850 on bars and floor. Fans also got a glimpse of freshman Nicoletta Koulos and her floor routine, and witnessed the return of senior Maggie O'Hara on beam after her season-ending injury last February.
There was much more than just gymnastics for fans. Santa made an appearance prior to the meet on the concourse, the Wolverines collected food donations for Food Gatherers and the team engaged with season ticket holders following the meet in its annual season ticket holder meet-and-greet session.
Michigan's 2020 regular season will start on Friday, Jan. 10 with a tri-meet against Washington and Texas Woman's University at 6:30 p.m. inside Crisler Center. The Huskies are led by former U-M gymnast Elise Ray Statz, who is a member of the Michigan Athletics Hall of Honor. After the meet, fans will have a chance to meet the Michigan gymnasts and take pictures with them on the concourse.
