A Look at the Elon Phoenix
• Elon opened the season with back-to-back wins over Mars Hill, 90-84, and Milligan, 95-54. The Phoenix visited Georgia Tech on Monday night (Nov. 11) and dropped a 64-41 decision in their first regular-season game against a Division I opponent before traveling to Ann Arbor.
• Marcus Sheffield II is the leading scorer for the Phoenix through two games this season. He is averaging 17.5 points per game and is one of five players scoring in double figures for Elon.
• Mike Schrage is in his first season as head coach at Elon. Schrage joins the Phoenix following two seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State. Prior to his time with the Buckeyes, Schrage was an assistant coach at both Butler and Stanford.
• Elon was picked to finish 10th in the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Poll. Graduate student Sheffield II, who came to Elon from Stanford, was a Preseason All-CAA honorable mention selection.
• Last season, Elon posted an 11-21 overall record, including a 7-11 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Phoenix were the No. 7 seed in the CAA Tournament and fell to UNC Wilmington in the first round.
The Series with the Phoenix
• The Wolverines have played Elon one other time, coincidentally during U-M's 2015 Battle 4 Atlantis appearance. The Wolverines claimed an 88-68 win over the Phoenix in a campus matchup prior to leaving for Paradise Island. Current L.A. Clippers guard Derrick Walton, Jr. led the Maize and Blue with 24 points after knocking down six three-pointers and adding seven assists, four steals and six rebounds. Current Brooklyn Nets guard Caris LeVert added 11 points and seven assists, while current Miami Heat guard Duncan Robinson had 19 off the bench going 6-for-6 including 5-for-5 from deep.
The Battle 4 Atlantis
• For the second time, Michigan will play in the Bad Boy Motors Battle 4 Atlantis tournament over the Thanksgiving holiday in Paradise Island, Bahamas. The Battle 4 Atlantis has become one of the premiere preseason college basketball tournaments. Hosted at the Atlantis resort, games are played in the Imperial Arena, which is a grand ballroom turned into a basketball venue.
• In the 2015 event, the Wolverines won an 88-68 decision over Elon (Nov. 16) in a pre-travel campus matchup. In the opening round on the island, U-M dropped a 74-60 decision to UConn (Nov. 25) before rallying with a 102-47 win over Charlotte (Nov. 26). U-M closed with a 2-1 record after a 78-72 win over Texas (Nov. 27) to earn a fifth-place finish.
• This year, the Wolverines will open with Iowa State (Nov. 27) in the first round and will go on to face either Alabama or North Carolina on the second day. The final day could see the Wolverines facing any of the other four bracket members -- Gonzaga, Oregon, Seton Hall or Southern Miss.
• There is the potential for U-M to play Oregon twice in a two-week stretch. The Wolverines will host the Ducks at Crisler Center on Dec. 14th.
