EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis duos of Mattias Siimar/Andrew Fenty and Nick Beaty/Patrick Maloney finished first and third, respectively, at the Michigan State Frank Beeman Invitational, which was held Friday through Sunday (Oct. 11-13) at the MSU Tennis Center.
In an format that required a team to win at least two of three matches per round (one doubles, two singles) to advance, the pair of Siimar and Fenty went 3-0 as a doubles pair and 6-0 in singles play to win the event. In Sunday's (Oct. 13) final, Siimar and Fenty defeated Iowa's Joe Tyler and Will Davies, 6-2, in the doubles match, then Siimar defeated Tyler, 6-1, 6-3, and Fenty downed Davies, 6-2, 7-5, to sweep their way to the tournament title.
Beaty and Maloney cruised into Saturday's (Oct. 12) semifinals but fell to Davies and Tyler, 2-1. In Sunday's third-place match, Beaty and Maloney swept the Marquette team of Luis Heredia Gomez and Luke Smrek, starting with a 6-4 doubles win. In the singles portion of the matchup, Beaty bested Heredia Gomez, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8, and Maloney defeated Smrek, 6-4, 6-4.
Next up, a collection of Wolverines will take part in the ITA Fall Regional, Wednesday through Sunday (Oct. 16-21) in Columbus, Ohio.
