COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Junior Mattias Siimar and sophomore Andrew Fenty finished as the doubles runner-up Monday (Oct. 21) to highlight the University of Michigan men's tennis team's results at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Michigan also had another doubles semifinalist, a singles semifinalist and two singles quarterfinalists in the five-day event (Oct. 17-21) on the Ohio State campus.
Facing Robert Cash and John McNally from Ohio State, the No. 50-ranked Michigan pair won the first set, 6-3, and had three match points up 5-3 in the second set. However, the Buckeyes ended up taking the set, 7-5, and prevailed 10-6 in the 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.
Seeded No. 2, Siimar and Fenty earned a bye in the round of 64 and rattled off three straight wins before a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over No. 53 Justin Boulias and James Trotter of Ohio State in the semifinals Sunday (Oct. 20).
The pairing of senior Connor Johnston and freshman Ondrej Styler also excelled on the way to the semifinals. Their tournament was highlighted by an 8-5 quarterfinal victory over the top seed, No. 36 Kennousuke Nouchi and Jannik Optiz of Western Michigan, before an 8-5 loss to OSU's Cash and McNally in the semifinals.
Styler, seeded fourth, was Michigan's top performer in singles as he won his first four matches, keyed by a win over No. 79 Zeke Clark of Illinois in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-4. His run came to an end in the semifinals with a three-set loss to No. 27 Kyle Seelig of Ohio State, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6.
Both Siimar and Fenty also advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play. Fenty, ranked No. 30 and seeded third, bowed out against Northwestern's Dominik Story in a three-set nailbiter, 4-6, 6-2, 6-7 (5). Siimar, ranked No. 53, fell to OSU's Seelig by a 6-1, 6-3 score.
Junior Harrison Brown scored a big upset in the singles round of 32, taking down No. 8 seed and No. 67-ranked Guillermo Cabrera of Notre Dame in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
