ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team was unable to close out No. 11 Baylor after taking the doubles point, falling, 4-1, in the finals of the ITA Kick-Off on Sunday (Jan. 27) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan earned its lone point of the day after securing wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in doubles. The Wolverine duo of sophomore Mattias Siimar and freshman Andrew Fenty got the first win in doubles with a 6-3 victory. Junior Connor Johnston and sophomore Harrison Brown followed with a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker win to clinch the point for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines continued impressive play into singles as they took the first set in three of the six matches, but momentum quickly shifted in the second sets. Johnston was the lone Wolverine to win his second set to push his match to a third set, while freshman Patrick Maloney lost a hard-fought battle at No. 5, 7-6 (4), after coming back from a 5-2 second-set deficit. The Bears earned two of their four points after the second set, winning their matches at Nos. 3 and 5.
Michigan will be back at the Varsity Tennis Center on Friday (Feb. 1), when the Wolverines host Cornell at 5 p.m.
