BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore third baseman Madison Uden used a two-run double in the top of the ninth inning to break open a scoreless game and push the No. 15-ranked University of Michigan softball team to a 2-0 victory over Indiana on Sunday afternoon (April 29) at the Hoosiers' Andy Mohr Field. The Wolverines took the rubber match to claim the series and stay atop the Big Ten Conference standings.
It was Uden's older sister, Taylor, that played the hero in extra-innings for the Hoosiers yesterday (April 28) when she knocked out a walk-off home run in the ninth inning. Madison responded in kind with two on and two outs in the ninth today -- and after Indiana intentionally walked senior right-handed pitcher/first baseman Tera Blanco to get to her.
Freshman shortstop Natalia Rodriguez led off the inning with a looped double to shallow left-center, and after advancing on a flyout, was caught in a rundown on a subsequent fielder's choice, allowing junior center fielder Natalie Peters to advance to third on the play. Blanco, after earning her free base, stole second to put two in scoring position, and Uden sent them both home with a double to the left-center field gap for the only runs of the contest.
Indiana threatened with a one-out bloop single in the home half of the ninth, but freshman left-hander Meghan Beaubien slammed the door with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. Beaubien (29-3) earned the win in relief, striking out five while allowing four hits over 3.2 innings pitched.
Beaubien entered the game with two on and one out in the sixth and, after allowing a first-pitch single to load the bases, similarly struck out back-to-back Hoosier batters -- including an inning-ending punchout -- to get out of the jam. Beaubien combined for the shutout with Blanco, who kept Indiana off the board through 5.1 innings with four strikeouts, two hits and three walks allowed.
Michigan threatened late in regulation, loading the bases in the sixth before getting thrown out at home in the seventh -- off another Uden single that followed an intentional walk to Blanco. The Wolverine third baseman paced the Wolverine offense, shaking off two strikeouts early in the game to deliver clutch hitting when it mattered most.
Michigan (40-8, 15-2 Big Ten) will kick off a busy five-game week at home on Tuesday (May 1), hosting Western Michigan for its last non-conference slate of the regular season at 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
