MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Using final-round 74s (+2) from seniors Emily White and Megan Kim, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted a 300 today (Tuesday, Feb. 20) to finish 10th with a 910 tally at Louisville's Moon Golf Invitational held at the Duran Golf Club.
"The wind was up for all three rounds and we had trouble controlling our trajectories and start lines in the wind," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Overall, everyone made a lot of birdies, but counteracting that with some big numbers. It was great to get a tournament under our belts to start the spring."
In the spring-opening event, the Wolverines showed some tournament rust opening with a 312 total in yesterday's opening 18. However, with an even-par 72 from senior Kathy Lim and a 73 from White, the Maize and Blue rallied in the second round with a 298 to sit 11th after the first day at 610. With a pair of 74s from White and Kim, as well as a 75 from Lim, Michigan closed with a 300 to post its third top-10 finish of the season.
Individually, White closed as the top Wolverine for the second time this season as her 225 (78-73-75) tied for 28th -- her third top 30 of the season. For the second straight event, Lim was among the top two individually as she tied for 40th at 228 (81-72-75). After a solid start, junior Elodie Van Dievoet fell off the pace in her final round with an 84 and tied for 52nd at 233 (74-75-84).
"Emily (White) really had two solid rounds to finish her tournament," added Dowling. "She's worked really hard on her putting and it's great to see her drop some more putts. Kathy (Lim) also rebounded well after her first round with some nice on-course adjustments."
Highlighting the individual duo was sophomore Hannah Ghelfi, who tied for 42nd with a career-best 229 54-hole total. After tying her season-low in the first round with a 76, she fired a career-best 73 (+1) in the second round. Closing with an 80, she was still able to post the career-low tally in just her third career 54-hole event.
"We will come back to practice this week with some urgency and clear purpose as we prepare for our winter break trip and the rest of our spring," said Dowling.
The Wolverines return from the Florida to finish work in Ann Arbor before U-M's spring break and trip to Fairfax, California, for San Francisco's Meadow Club Women's Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday, March 5-6, at the Meadow Club. Last year, U-M was led by Van Dievoet's tied-for-seventh individual performance as the Wolverines finish fifth in the 13 team field.
