ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After helping the University of Michigan women's cross country team to a national fourth-place finish and nearly earning All-America honors at last weekend's NCAA Championships, first-year collegian Anne Forsyth will continue her breakout season at the Canadian Cross Country Championships on Saturday (Nov. 24) in Kingston, Ontario.
Forsyth -- a dual citizen of the United States and Canada as the child of American mother Jessica (Kluge) Forsyth and Canadian father Ian Forsyth, both of whom competed for Michigan -- will run in the six-kilometer (3.73-mile) U20 women's race at 12:15 p.m. over the grounds of the Canadian Forces Base Kingston and Fort Henry.
Forsyth is the highest finisher among the three women who are doing the NCAA-Canadian Championships double, ahead of 174th-place Taryn O'Neill of Villanova and 188th-place Shona McCulloch of Washington. Forsyth is the first female runner from Michigan to compete at the Canadian U20 Championships since Jaimie Phelan was third as a first-year Wolverine in 2013.
Her debut for the Wolverines in the postseason this fall was a revelation for the squad, adding important front-running firepower to what was already one of the deepest lineups in the nation.
In her first official collegiate race, the Big Ten Conference Championships, she placed eighth for second-team All-Big Ten and Freshman of the Year honors to help lead Michigan to its third straight team title. She then led the Wolverines to their fourth consecutive NCAA Great Lakes Region title with a third-place individual finish.
Forsyth capped off the collegiate season with a 46th-place showing at the NCAA Championships, finishing as the No. 3 runner for the Wolverines' fourth-place team. Among freshmen, only her teammate Camille Davre (29th) and Arkansas' Katrina Robinson (41st) finished ahead of her nationally.
Depending on the results of Saturday's race and her plans for the winter, she could be eligible to continue her cross country season even further on the international level. As many as six runners from Saturday will be selected to compete for Team Canada at the NACAC Championships and/or the IAAF World Cross Country Championships later this winter.
The NACAC (North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association) meet will be held Feb. 16, 2019, in Port of Spain, Trinidad, followed just over a month later by the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Aahus, Denmark, on March 30, 2019.
